We are interested in what happens between those elements.
How do participants engage with what they hear? How do ideas from different sessions begin to connect? And how can more of what emerges during a conference continue afterwards?
These questions have become an ongoing field of inquiry in our work.
We bring many years of experience in facilitation, collective learning, participation and sensemaking. At the same time, we do not see this as a finished method. Every conference brings together a different field of people, ideas and perspectives. We bring what we know, stay curious about what happens and continue learning through the work.
WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Engagement makes people part of the conference.
When participants have opportunities to reflect, exchange perspectives and connect what they hear to their own experience, they are more likely to process, remember and share what they encounter. It also creates space to notice what resonates, surprises, challenges or moves them. Creating structured opportunities to connect also makes it easier for new participants and those outside established networks to find their way in and take part.
Coherence is where the real value of bringing many people, ideas and perspectives into one place can unfold.
Instead of leaving with a collection of separate impressions, participants begin to see a bigger picture: how ideas relate, where perspectives challenge each other and what new possibilities are emerging.
Together, engagement and coherence create lasting value.
More of what happens during the conference has a chance to travel beyond it into future conversations, decisions, relationships and collaborations.
WHAT THIS COULD LOOK LIKE
There is no single format that works for every conference. We develop the approach together with you and adapt it to the purpose, programme and people involved.
Three elements we are currently working with are:
Preparing to Notice
A facilitated opening conversation invites participants to arrive with curiosity and attention to connections across themes, disciplines and experiences, and to notice what resonates with them along the way.
Making Connections Visible
Throughout the conference, participants contribute questions, observations, tensions and unexpected connections. Together with a graphic recorder, these develop into a shared visual landscape.
Rather than simply documenting individual presentations, the visual helps make relationships across the conference visible and becomes a shared thinking tool.
Weaving What Emerged
Towards the end, participants come together around what has emerged.
What connected? What changed the way we understood something else? Which perspectives challenged or complemented each other? What is becoming visible now that was not visible before? What is worth carrying forward?
The aim is not to create one conclusion or consensus. It is to notice more of what became possible because these particular people, ideas and perspectives were brought together.
ENGAGEMENT. COHERENCE. LASTING VALUE.
Engagement means people become active participants rather than only an audience.
Coherence means a bigger picture can emerge across people, ideas and sessions.
Lasting value means more of what emerges has a chance to continue beyond the event.
We see this work as a practice we continue to develop together with the organisations and people we work with.
EXAMPLE AT VARMERE VÅTERE VILLERE
In 2026, together with Varmere Våtere Villere, we experimented with this approach by creating spaces between the festival sessions where participants could pause, reflect, connect experiences and begin to see the festival as a whole.
